The Lockney Area Chamber of Commerce was organized in March of 1956.  It was organized under the leadership of Edgar Hays, the co-owner and editor of the Lockney Beacon.  The Chamber began to serve the area as a service organization after receiving its charter.  It served both the merchants and farmers of this area.

Dick Whitley was the first and only full-time manager.  He served from 1956 to February 1, 1958.  J.D. Copeland was a charter member of the organization and served as treasurer from 1958 until 1989.  He is still an active member of the board of directors.

One annual event the Chamber sponsors is our banquet.  Currently recognized at the banquet are the Citizens of the Year and Fireman of the Year.  Over the years the Chamber has recognized the Man and Woman of the Year, Family of the Year, Extra Mile Award and recognition of special activities by individuals.  Over 500 people were in attendance at the 1965 banquet to hear Dr. Kenneth McFarland.  Every few years the entertainment features local talent and these are always well attended banquets.

The Chamber sponsors or helps with several projects each year.  One of the best projects that the organization has undertaken and seen to its completion, was the Mackenzie Lake project.  The water authority furnishes water for Lockney, Floydada, Tulia and Silverton.  It is also a well used fishing and boating facility.

Members of the Chamber are local businesses and individuals.  The organization is overseen by a board of directors which meets on the first Tuesday of each month.  The welfare and growth of Lockney and the surrounding area is the chief concern of this organization.
